    Grapevine Press (2010)

‘Outside on Warmoesstraat, the night was closing in, bringing its usual rucksacked arrivals seeking shelter and a spliff, its groups of beer-swilling Brits, the ubiquitous crack dealers and shifty-eyed men heading for the red light booths. Weaving amongst these were flashing figures apparently attired in the skins of wild animals, but they worked their way towards the river so fast that scrutiny was impossible.
‘Neon signs announced bar and sex shop, coffeeshop and hotel. The bells of Sint Nicholoaaskerk and Oude Kerk chimed a lengthy carillon, a cheery summons to all good spirits. On the dark water by the cathedral, the new ship swayed and sent out its own music in which ancient cadences and technical finesse were combined. The strange-angled melodies and sudden glissandos painted pictures in the mind, images that did not belong to ordinary perception, many of them being mythic in nature, and to the majority of listeners, incomprehensible.’
A mysterious vessel sails into Amsterdam and sets up as the world’s ultimate nightclub. It soon proves preternaturally tempting, even to sensible Liz, who moves to the city to be with her musician boyfriend, Rafferty. Soon they are joined by her effete, intellectual son Paul, whose interests in the occult, existentialism and sexual exploration lead him – and the victims of his experiments – into surreal and soul-changing adventures.
‘There is a Spiritus ship that floats in the psyches of each of us. When the climate is attuned to just the right pitch of desire, it will come out of nowhere, to confront us in real form, to lure us towards it with its impossibly beautiful lights and music, on a dark river at night.'
  • Magick in the West End

    Magick in the West End

Step inside Malynowsky's Central, a nearly-two-hundred-year-old bookstore teeming with tomes on magick and esoteric lore. Maybe you recognize the young woman sitting in the shop window reading Tarot for customers. That's Kala, who brought us inside a fascinating otherworld of true magick and myth at The Magick Bookshop in Oxford.

Magick in the West End Llewellyn Publications (2006) - Sequel to The Magick Bookshop

Winner of the 2006 COVR Award for Visionary Fiction

Kala continues her urban forays into Qabalah, Witchcraft, and the occult at this not-so-ordinary bookshop on the gritty West End streets of modern-day London. These seven vivid tales are filled with metaphysical happenings and unforgettable characters-including Sam, the sexually-frustrated art student with a heartbreaking past; Shahlia, the Kurdish mother on the run from an abusive husband; and the wise shop owner Mr. Malynowsky, who helps Kala break free from an unhealthy downward spiral that threatens everything dear to her.

    The Magick Bookshop

The Magick Bookshop features the antiquarian bookshop in Oxford where Kala Trobe worked for several years. It stars the wily Mr Malynowsky, esotericist extraordinaire and vendor of ancient tomes. Occult-related adventures - all based on real occurrences - naturally abound in such an environment. Kala Trobe looks at Magick as it is played out in everyday - but never ordinary - life. There are real occult techniques and much information on Qabalah contained within this set of inter-related short-stories.

  • The Witch's Guide to Life

    The Witch's Guide to Life

This is a cornerstone text for any witch’s library. How can the magickally minded person really bring their beliefs and practises into everyday life? How may metaphysical and Wiccan ideals be reconciled with the ‘slings and arrows of outrageous fortune’?

The Witch's Guide to LifeLlewellyn Publications (2003)

Practising occultist Kala Trobe has her feet on both levels as she looks at the formative issues and processes in life – often those considered to be ‘dark’ or ‘negative’ – and how they might be handled in an enlightened manner. Depression and eating disorders are amongst the ‘negatives’ discussed in the text – along with their positive counterparts; a section of magickal recipes for every sabbat, advice on exercise and running by an initiate in training for the next Olympic marathon, and an overriding emphasis on approaching the vicissitudes of life as spiritual rocket-launchers. The Witch's Guide to Life explores hundreds of aspects of the Occult, the Sabbats, and Spellcraft.
